SeaWolves Lose Fifth Straight To Ponies

The SeaWolves dropped another close ballgame on Tuesday night as they were taken down by the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 5-3 at UPMC Park.

Erie jumped ahead in the bottom of the first against Ponies starter Casey Delgado. With two outs, Mike Gerber walked and scored on a Steven Moya double for a 1-0 lead.

The Rumble Ponies took the lead in the fourth against Erie starter Matt Crouse. With two outs, L.J. Mazzilli walked to extend the inning. Matt Oberste then doubled to put runners on second and third for Tomas Nido. Nido doubled home the baserunners for a 2-1 Binghamton lead. David Thompson doubled home Oberste to make it 3-1.

Binghamton added to its lead in the seventh. Nido led off with an infield single and Thompson belted a two-run home run to left for a 5-1 advantage.

Erie closed the gap to three runs in the eighth when Gabriel Quintana led off with a solo home run to left. The solo blast was his 21st of the season.

The SeaWolves made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Gerber singled and Delgado was lifted in favor of Cory Burns. Moya followed with a base hit and Christin Stewart was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dawel Lugo grounded out to third, scoring Gerber to make it 5-3. With runners on second and third, Burns struck out Quintana to end the game.

Delgado (10-5) earned the win for Binghamton, his second straight over Erie. He allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts in a season-high 8.1 innings.

Crouse (6-6) took the loss allowing five runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts in seven innings.

The SeaWolves will try to avoid a sweep on Wednesday night at UPMC Park at 7:05 p.m. RHP Spencer Turnbull makes his Double-A debut for the SeaWolves.
