SeaWolves Lose Road Opener in Binghamton (4-13-17)

The SeaWolves dropped their second straight game as they fell to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, 7-5, on Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium.

Binghamton jumped ahead in the second against Erie starter Tyler Alexander when Tomas Nido connected on a leadoff home run to right for a 1-0 lead.

The Rumble Ponies added to their lead in the third. Matt Oberste led off with a single and moved to second on an error. L.J. Mazzilli singled with one out putting runners on the corners. Nido grounded out, scoring Oberste making it 2-0. Luis Guillorme then singled home Mazzilli making it 3-0.

Binghamton continued to add to the lead in the fourth. With one out, Alexander hit Kevin Kaczmarski for the second time in the game and he advanced to second on a stolen base. With two outs, Oberste walked putting two on for Cody Decker. Decker doubled home the baserunners, giving the Ponies a 5-0 lead. Mazzilli followed with an RBI double, plating Decker making it 6-0. Alexander gave way to reliever Victor Alcantara who faced Nido. Nido walked, keeping the inning alive for Guillorme. Guillorme doubled home Mazzilli to make it 7-0.

Rumble Ponies starter P.J. Conlon kept the SeaWolves off the scoreboard for the first five innings of the game. In the sixth, A.J. Simcox led off with his second double of the season. Jason Krizan then clubbed his second home run of the year, making it a 7-2 game.

The SeaWolves continued to claw away at the Binghamton lead in the seventh against reliever Luis Mateo. Christin Stewart led off and reached on an error. Grayson Greiner followed with an infield single, putting runners on the corners. A balk brought home Stewart making it 7-3 and putting Greiner into scoring position. Mateo got the next two outs before giving up a two-out walk to Simcox. Krizan came up with a double down the left field line, scoring a pair to make it a 7-5 game. Erie would get no closer.

Alberto Baldonado would retire the final six Erie hitters in order to record his first save of the season.

Alexander (0-1) took the loss allowing six runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.

Conlon (2-0) earned his second win in as many starts. He allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts over six innings of work.

The SeaWolves and Rumble Ponies meet in the middle game of the series on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium at 7:05 p.m. RHP Artie Lewicki (0-0, 9.82 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves making his second start of the season against RHP Corey Oswalt (0-1, 9.00 ERA).
