SeaWolves Swept at Home by Reading

READING (22-13) 8-11-0
ERIE (18-19) 3-6-1

The home run barrage continued for the Reading Fightin Phils on Thursday afternoon as they took the series finale from the SeaWolves, 8-3, at UPMC Park.

Reading jumped ahead in the top of the first against Erie starter Myles Jaye when Andrew Pullin connected on an opposite-field, two-run home run for a 1-0 lead.

The Fightins extended the lead in the second. Jiandido Tromp led off with a single and scored on a two-out Mitch Walding base hit to make it 2-0.

The SeaWolves grabbed a brief lead in the last of the second against Reading starter Shane Watson. Dominic Ficociello led off with a base hit and Zach Cox walked, putting the tying run on first. Kody Eaves followed and belted a three-run home run to right, his second of the year, for a 3-2 Erie lead.

Reading quickly regained the lead in the top of the third. Scott Kingery led off and reached on an error. With one out, Pullin walked, putting the go-ahead run on base for a pinch hitter, Kyle Martin. Martin blasted a three-run home run to right, giving Reading a 5-3 advantage.

In the top of the fourth, Osmel Aguila led off and connected on a solo home run to center for Reading’s third long ball of the game. Walding followed with a walk and would later score on a two-out, Pullin base hit to make it 7-3.

Reading would add one more run in the top of the ninth against reliever Kurt Spomer. Aguila tripled with two outs and was doubled home by Walding.

The Reading bullpen of Mario Sanchez, Austin Davis and Jessen Therrien combined to toss six scoreless innings in relief of the starter Watson. Sanchez (2-0) earned the win tossing three, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

Jaye (0-4) took the loss allowing a season-high seven runs, six earned, on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

Erie hits the road on Friday to start a three-game weekend series against the Altoona Curve at People’s Natural Gas Field. Lefty Tyler Alexander (2-3, 4.32 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Alex McRae (3-0, 2.47 ERA).
