VILLA NAMES NEW SOCCER COACH
Villa Maria Academy has named a new head soccer. Peter Wagner will take over for Afrim Latifi, who resigned at the end of January. Wagner served as the varsity assistant coach and the head JV coach the last three years under Latifi. As a duo, the group helped lead the Victors to a state runner-up finish in 2014, and the school’s first state championship this past season when they went 23-0-2.
Wagner had plenty of success molding and developing the JV players and his record was reflective of that. In his three seasons as the JV bench boss he led Villa to a 36-4-4 mark while many of the players he instructed played varsity games the same day after suiting up for the JV’s. Wagner also spent two years as an assistant within the Prep soccer program.
“This is a very exciting time for me as I’ve always wanted to be a head coach of a great program,” Wagner said. “Over the past three years I believe Afrim created a successful program that I had the privilege of being a part of. I look forward to continuing the success of this team for many years to come.”
The Villa soccer program has obviously achieved wondrous things the last two years. Director of Athletics Bill Flanagan feels that will continue under the leadership of Wagner.
“Pete is a very knowledgeable young coach and an excellent communicator,” Flanagan said. “Combine that with the fact he has been in this program for the last three years and we feel he is the perfect person to take over this post.”
