The SeaWolves three game winning streak was snapped by the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, 10-6, in front of a sellout crowd of 6,680 at UPMC Park.
The Rumble Ponies struck in the top of the first inning against Erie starter A.J. Ladwig. Luis Guillorme and Kevin Kaczmarski started with back-to-back singles. Kevin Taylor singled home Guillorme for a 1-0 lead. Matt Oberste followed with a base hit, plating Kaczmarski to make it 2-0. Patrick Mazeika doubled home Taylor for a 3-0 lead.
Binghamton added a run in the second. Patrick Biondi led off with a single and moved to third on a Guillorme base hit. Biondi scored on a Kaczmarski fielder’s choice for a 4-0 lead.
Erie roared back in the last of the second against Binghamton starter Tommy Milone. Grayson Greiner led off and snapped a five-game hitless streak with a solo home run to left, his 11th of the season. Christin Stewart followed with a solo blast to right, his league-leading 25th. With one out, A.J. Simcox homered to left-center, his sixth of the season, to make it a 4-3 game.
The Ponies went back ahead by three in the top of the third. Mazeika led off with a double and Tyler Moore singled with one out. Biondi doubled home both baserunners for a 6-3 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Erie closed the gap to a run once again. With one out, Mike Gerber belted a solo home run to right, his ninth of the season and second in the past three games. Gabriel Quintana and Greiner followed with back-to-back base hits, putting runners on the corners. Stewart lifted a sacrifice fly to right, plating Quintana to make it 6-5.
Binghamton added runs in the fifth and sixth innings off of reliever Victor Alcantara. In the fifth, Biondi singled with one out and scored on a Guillorme double. In the sixth, David Thompson walked and later scored on a Gustavo Nunez base hit, giving the Ponies an 8-5 lead.
The SeaWolves final run came in the bottom of the seventh when Dawel Lugo capped a five home run night with a solo blast to left, his fifth, making it 8-6. Erie would get no closer.
The Ponies put up a pair of unearned runs against reliever Kurt Spomer in the eighth to take a four-run lead.
Ladwig (7-5) took the loss for the SeaWolves allowing six runs on 11 hits with a walk and three strikeouts in three innings of work.
Milone (1-0) earned the win allowing six runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
The SeaWolves and Rumble Ponies meet in the middle game of the series on Tuesday night at UPMC Park. Lefty Matt Crouse (6-5, 4.55 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Casey Delgado (9-5, 4.84 ERA).
Tuesday is Bark at the Park. Fans can bring their well-behaved, leashed dogs to the game. All dogs get in free.
Tuesday also features Kids Eat Free presented by 94.7 BOB FM. The first 250 kids ages 12 and younger receive a voucher good for a Smith’s Hot Dog, Pepsi fountain drink and bag of UTZ chips. Fans 21 and older can take advantage of Two-Buck Tuesday specials with $2 Budweiser and Bud Light drafts until the end of the sixth inning, exclusively in the Bud Light Beer Garden.
